....but I still like the poetry, so I decided to share it. :-)
Cocoa is a cad and coward,
Cocoa is a vulgar beast,
Cocoa is a dull, disloyal,
Lying, crawling cad and clown,
And may very well be grateful
To the fool that takes him down.

-The Flying Inn (1914)
LOL I was unaware that Chesterton was anti cocoa......
ReplyDeletelol. Yes, he was....though in this case it was also more than just his own natural dislike of the beverage. This poem had originally appeared in the pages of his brother's paper, who was constantly attacking the "cocoa press"...
ReplyDeleteGiven that GKC himself was at the time a columnist of the Daily News owned by George Cadbury (the chocolate and cocoa manufacture, i.e., as in the Cadbury eggs of today), you can imagine the effect of that. This latest attack was the one that led to GKC's separation from that paper after 11 years of writing for him. Which no doubt Chesterton foresaw would happen and desired, since he thought his journalistic independence was being threatened.
Haha I should have know it was something like that.
ReplyDeleteHowever if he did dislike the drink perhaps he was killing two birds with one stone so to speak.
